The first public zoo opened up in Philadelphia,Pennsylvania in 1874. On the first day over 3000 visitors came to see almost 800 animals. The price if admission was only 25 cents for adults and a dime for children. The zoo had planned to open 15 years earlier, but the Civil War delayed the construction.
